Heritability and Genetic Variance Estimates for Resistance to Downy Mildew in Cucumber Accession Ames 2354

چکیده
Downy mildew (DM) of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a devastating disease of cucurbits. resistance is available but is not sufficient to eliminate the need for fungicides to control the disease. previously, the USDA plant Introduction collection of cucumber germplasm was screened in poland and North Carolina, and Ames 2354 was identified as highly resistant. The objectives of this study were to develop an effective method for measuring resistance to DM and to determine the type of gene action controlling resistance in Ames 2354. plant Introduction 175695 was used as the susceptible parent in crosses with Ames 2354 to make seven generations for study: p1, p2, F1, F1 reciprocal, F2, BC1p1, and BC1p2. Additive effects were more important than dominant effects in our study with resistance attributed to a few major loci. Greenhouse testing methods were identified that can be used in selecting for improved resistance. Selection using the best test methods could lead to a gain of at least 2.5 points (on a 10 point scale) per generation even under the lower selection intensities (i.e., 20%) typically used in recurrent selection programs. Gene Effects Controlling Heritability of Downy Mildew Resistance in Nigerian Elite Pearl Millet Lines
Downy mildew disease caused by the fungus Sclerospora graminicola Schroet, causes yield losses across the millet growing zones of Nigeria. Identification of the source of resistance and gene actions controlling resistance is useful in developing appropriate breeding strategies. Therefore there was need to study downy mildew resistance in Nigerian elite pearl millet lines. Five pearl millet pare...
متن کاملEffects of Heat Shock on Photosynthetic Properties, Antioxidant Enzyme Activity, and Downy Mildew of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)
Heat shock is considered an abiotic stress for plant growth, but the effects of heat shock on physiological responses of cucumber plant leaves with and without downy mildew disease are still not clear. In this study, cucumber seedlings were exposed to heat shock in greenhouses, and the responses of photosynthetic properties, carbohydrate metabolism, antioxidant enzyme activity, osmolytes, and d...
متن کاملQTLs for Downy Mildew Resistance and Their Association with LRR-RLK Resistance Gene Analogs in Cucumber
Downy mildew (DM) caused by the obligate oomycete Pseudoperonospora cubensis is an important disease of cucumber and other cucurbit crops. In the United States, for more than 50 years, DM was effectively controlled in cucumber through host resistance conferred mainly by the dm-1 derived from PI 197087, which was overcome in 2004 due to the appearance of a new pathotype. Resistance sources (for ...
متن کاملInheritance of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and anthracnose (Sphaceloma ampelinum) resistance in grapevines.
Downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and anthracnose (Sphaceloma ampelinum) are two of the major diseases of most grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars grown in Thailand. Therefore, breeding grapevines for improved downy mildew and anthracnose resistance is crucial. Factorial crosses were made between three downy mildew and/or anthracnose resistant lines ('NY88.0517.01', 'NY65.0550.04', and 'NY...
متن کاملDowny Mildew Disease Progress in Resistant and Susceptible Cucumbers Tested in the Field at Different Growth Stages
Downy mildew, caused by the oomycete pathogen Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) Rostov, is a major foliar disease of cucumber. Ten years after the reemergence of P. cubensis, downy mildew continues to be a major threat to cucumber production in the United States. Cucumber accessions with high levels of resistance have been identified. Development of cultivars with high levels of re...
